Visit the monument

A symbol of the modern state.
The building asserts royal power: it protects the capital but also guarantees the kings against its uprisings. It was the heart of the French monarchy until 1682, when Louis XIV preferred Versailles. The keep was used as a prison from the 16th century until the 19th century: Fouquet, the Marquis de Sade and Mirabeau were all held there. Transformed into barracks and an arsenal by Napoleon I, the fortress protected Paris during the invasions of the 19th century.

A place of national memory.
Restored after severe damage during the Second World War, the château de Vincennes is now home to the Service Historique de la Défense (SHD).
Universal distribution of Revelacio tablets, included in the price of the admission ticket

Guided tours of the castle

Several dates from September to December 2024
The château de Vincennes is a monument steeped in history. As a major part of our national heritage, a visit to the keep and the Sainte Chapelle will give you a better understanding of this royal residence turned state prison. From Charles V to the present day, via Henry II and Louis XIV, these buildings have been at the centre of France's political and military life for several centuries. Today, the keep is considered to be the tallest in Europe. It is a wonderful example of the military architecture of the Hundred Years' War. The Sainte Chapelle, recently restored, remains a little-known monument despite the beauty of its lines. Its 16th-century stained glass windows are recognised as major works of the Renaissance for their artistic and technical quality.
Open to all (children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult)
The tour is only available in French
