This exceptional architectural complex was built in the Middle Ages on the island of Mont Majour. The abbey comprises a 10th-century pre-Romanesque building, an abbey church and a 12th-century Romanesque cloister. Built by Benedictine monks. A second monumental monastery was added to Montmajour in the 18th century to the west, the Saint-Maur building. Its cloister was completely restored in 2013. The Saint Pierre hermitage, a troglodyte church is once again open to the public after several years of restoration work, as is more recently the first floor of the Saint-Maur building.
